Processing for a public radio station is a delicate balancing act—the signal must be loud enough and consistent enough to compete with commercial stations for cume, but still it must retain the trademark relaxed, “unprocessed” public radio sound. This balance is something we have achieved successfully with our public-radio clients, and we are continuing to develop a detailed model for using carefully adjusted processing to achieve a smooth, loud, and consistent unprocessed effect. Consistency is especially helpful in car radios, where road noise competes with the radio signal and contributes greatly to listener fatigue.

In addition to signal processing, we have worked with public radio stations to improve the acoustical performance of their studios and studio equipment. Part of this is judicious microphone processing, enhancing talk show hosts’ ability to open multiple microphones without creating a “hollow room” environment. Part of it is the adjustment of consoles and telephone systems for optimal performance.

We have also developed a number of concise proprietary tutorials designed specifically to refresh and enhance the skills of public radio hosts, producers, and engineers. These include sessions on microphone use, program recording skills, management of telephone calls, and balancing elements in production. All of our tutorials can be customized for the specific station, market, and situation of a client station, and we are always happy to create new tutorials when a client requires them.

Public radio has unique requirements that call for unique solutions. Our work with public radio clients has given us the experience and tools to enhance the performance of public radio stations without lessening their unique public radio character.
